October: National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month – Time to Check In
By Rhenelle Mc Sween-Navarro, Health Program Specialist
October isn’t just about pumpkins and costume, it’s also National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, a reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health. This month encourages everyone to pause, reflect, and check in with themselves and others.
Why Screenings Matter
Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S. adults experiences some form of mental illness each year. Unfortunately, many go undiagnosed due to stigma or lack of awareness.
Mental health screenings are a simple yet powerful tool to identify issues early, even before symptoms become severe. They can detect depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more, helping individuals take the first step toward support and recovery.
Depression: The Silent Struggle
Depression remains one of the most common and misunderstood mental health conditions. Persistent sadness, fatigue, irritability, and loss of interest are not signs of weakness but symptoms of a serious medical condition. Without treatment, depression can deeply affect relationships, work, and quality of life, and may even lead to suicide.
This October, take advantage of free or low-cost screenings offered by healthcare providers, online platforms, or community organizations. A quick questionnaire could be the first step toward healing.
Take Action
If you or someone you know has been feeling “off” for a while, don’t ignore it. Please seek help. Encourage open conversations about mental wellness and remind others that it’s okay to ask for support.
Let’s use this month to prioritize our mental health, break the stigma, and promote understanding, because no one should have to struggle in silence. Check out our list of resources below!
